622 Cycling

622 Cycling began as an outlet for me to share my experience and knowledge of over 25 years competing in Road, Mountain and Cyclocross events. I am focused on providing support for all levels of cyclists from beginners to experienced elite riders.

About Mark...

I began serious cycling at the age of 12. Then, it was riding 10 miles to the Denton Steakhouse outside Lincoln, NE with my parents. I started racing at age 13 and have been hooked ever since. Now, over 30 years later, I compete nationally for the Trek Cyclocross Collective.

Road racing was my first passion. As a junior I attended two training camps at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, CO with other national caliber juniors. You may have heard of some of my campmates, Lance Armstrong, George Hincapie and Bobby Julich (I always wondered how they made it and I didn't, hmmm, that's another conversation). I competed as a regional Category 2 racer up to the age of 20 when the up and coming sport of mountain biking caught my eye.

I enjoyed the laid back approach to mountain bikes and their ability to take you off the beaten path. I eventually landed a semi-pro contract with the Answer-Manitou team relocating to Valencia, CA and was a frequent top 10 finisher in the NORBA National Series (if I only knew then, what I know now about training!). I soon found that I was a better mechanic than athlete and went on to manage Manitou Racing Developments World Cup program, tuning suspension for the worlds top downhill and cross-country athletes.

In 2001 I said goodbye to California and pro mountain bike racing and returned to my home state of Nebraska. After a few years, racing the odd road race and getting knee deep into the single-speed mountain bike culture, I found cyclocross. A now booming discipline in the US, I set my sights on one goal, winning the UCI Masters World Championships. Over my three year self coached training program I went from getting my first USGP podium in year one, winning my first USGP in year two, and winning the USGP series, finishing 2nd at the National Championship, and winning the UCI Masters 40-44 World Cyclocross Championship in year three.

Now,I'm turning my focus towards sharing the successes and failures I've had over a lifetime of cycling. I feel the biggest gift you can give is to share and pass along your knowledge and passion. 622 Cycling is that outlet.

What is the significance of 622?

622 refers to the international wheel size standard that is used for road, cyclocross and 29er mountain bike wheels. Three very unique disciplines, all with their unique skill sets, and all brought together by a common characteristic.
